What happened to disinformation research after 2016

There has been, there is, and there will continue to be a lot of debate about post-2016 disinformation research which is willfully – even gleefully – interpreted as “censorship” by Republicans. From my perspective what happened is that Russia robustly interfered in the US information space in 2016 (Listen to: Dark Shining Moment) just as social media swallowed up media. In the democracies, funding for research on this topic surged in the aftermath. But organized Russian efforts dropped away just as the funding rolled in.

What was caught in the research focus was a lot of Americans – which has led to the confused situation today. This exchange illustrates the clashing perspective on the same moment.
